Why Montessori?

Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. She became Italy’s first female doctor, graduating from the University of Rome and specializing in pediatrics.

Having lived through both war and political upheaval in Italy, she was inspired to add peace education to the Montessori curriculum, and she was a three-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The greatest gift that a Montessori education gives a child is the joy of learning. A quality Montessori program creates an environment that encourages the development of the child’s physical, social, emotional, and academic growth. A Montessori teacher respects the child and engages them as a partner in learning both individual and group settings. Students are encouraged to explore the lessons and discover answers for themselves.  Form of education comes from understanding that each child learns in a unique way. Within the prepared environment, the child will receive a treasure of experiences that will lead them to absorb the wonder and joy of learning. Studies have proven that Montessori kids are more respectful, responsible, self-disciplined, independent, creative, self-motivated and organized than children who receive traditional educations. At Montessori Academy, we believe the best investment a parent can make in their child’s future is a quality education for the crucial, early years of life.

Montessori Academy, on South Hull Street

Guided by her deep love for children, Dr. Virginia Remko founded Montessori Academy in Montgomery in August of 1982. From a humble beginning with just eight students, the Academy continues to grown and shape young lives today an enduring legacy of her vision and care.

Currently, Montessori Academy boasts 4 peace-centered classrooms of various sizes based on age and development. All students begin their time at Montessori learning the essentials of community education - what does it mean to care for your neighbor by being responsible for the way your body is moving? How can we practice peace with our words and our actions? Who is responsible for being kind to everyone, every day? And from there we move forward into respectfully exploring the many creative and engaging lessons ranging from cultural customs, the life cycle of a tree, practical life skills (like self-care, shoe-tying, cleaning up after one’s self, etc. )

At Montessori Academy, we care for the whole life of the child and we understand that each little one in our care comes with an invisible backpack of experiences, emotions and expectations every day and it is our job to help them unpack those bags and find just the right spot for everything. We’ve got just the right spot for your family, too!

Part of the whole life of the child includes their family members! We encourage families to send a family photo with their student to display in the classrooms, because we’re all in this together.
